What’s something small that can instantly change your attitude, for better or worse?

Take It In

What does this reveal about who God is?

  1. Read Philippians 2:1-5. Paul wrote this from prison to a church dealing with relational tension. What does it reveal about God that His Word calls us to actively steward our attitude instead of waiting for our feelings to change?
  2. Read Romans 15:13 and 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. What does that reveal about where a positive attitude really comes from, and how will that change the way you pursue one?
  3. Read Philippians 2:5-11 and Hebrews 12:2. Point to the specific words in these verses where you see Jesus being humble, bold, and positive. The cross was the humblest and the boldest thing He ever did. What does it reveal about Jesus that He could do both at the same time?

Talk About It

How do we practically apply this?

  1.  Read 1 Peter 5:5-7. Pride walks in asking, "How am I being treated?" Humility walks in asking, "How can I serve?" Which question do you walk into your home or workplace with most often, and how will you change that this week?
  2. Mood is what happens to you, and attitude is the settled direction of thought and action you choose to show up with. Tell the group about the last time a mood ran the show. What did you do with it, and how will you steward it differently next time?
  3. Whether it's your kids, your spouse, or the people you work with, someone is catching your attitude right now. What are you handing them, and what's one change you will make so they catch something better?

Take It Home

What are we doing this week?

Jesus was positive, humble, and bold, all in one movement toward the Cross, and He invites us into that same attitude. This week, take one real step in each of the three. With the group, pick one to share out loud.

  1. Positive. Write down the automatic negative thought that shows up most. This week, talk back to it out loud, and end each day by naming one thing you're grateful to God for. Who will you encourage with a life-giving word?
  2. Humble. Pick one relationship where you tend to ask, "How am I being treated?" What is one specific way you will serve that person this week without needing credit? If you owe someone an "I was wrong," when will you say it?
  3. Bold. What conversation, invitation, or step have you been shrinking back from? Name it out loud to the group, and set the day this week when you will take it.
