Week 4

Walk in the Light

Cristina Campbell, Groups Pastor - 3/15/2026

**God is light. In Him there is no darkness.** In this message from **1 John 1:5–10**, we talk about how darkness rarely enters our lives all at once—it happens little by little, like slowly turning down a dimmer switch. Small compromises, hidden sin, and quiet justifications can slowly pull us away from the light. But the gospel gives us incredible hope. When we **confess our sins and bring them into the light**, God is faithful to forgive, restore, and purify us through Jesus. In this message you'll discover: • Why small compromises matter • What it really means to walk in the light • How confession and repentance bring freedom • The power of God’s forgiveness **1 John 1:9 —** *“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”* If you need a reset with God, this message is for you.

"Walk In The Light"

Connect

Have you ever gotten lost somewhere like on a hike, in a city, in a store, or even in your own house in the dark?

Take It In

What does this reveal about who God is?

I. Read Psalm 27:1, Psalm 119:105, John 8:12, Ephesians 5:8–9, & 1 John 1:5.

  1. What themes do you notice about what light represents?

II. Read 1 John 1:6–7

  1. What do you think it practically means to “walk in the light” rather than just believe in the light?
  2. If God is light (fully pure, true, holy, and without darkness at all), what does that reveal about the seriousness of sin?

III. Read 1 John 1:8–10

  1. What do these verses teach us about sin, confession, and the heart of God toward us when we are honest?

Talk About It

How do we practically apply this?
  1. How does our culture tend to soften or redefine what God calls darkness? Why do honesty and confession help produce deeper community instead of weaker community?
  2. Confession can feel vulnerable, costly, and exposing. What do you think people are most afraid will happen if they truly bring their darkness into the light?
  3. Darkness often grows in hidden places. Why do secrecy and isolation give sin so much power? How have you seen hidden things affect a person’s intimacy with God, relationships, or sense of peace?
  4. The sermon described sin as often being a slow turning of the dial, not always one dramatic fall. Where do you think people are most vulnerable to slowly drifting from the light without realizing it?

Take It Home

What are we doing this week?
  1. Take some time this week to prayerfully ask: “Lord, is there any area of darkness, compromise, or hiding in me that You want to bring into the light?” What would it look like to honestly sit with that question?
  2. What boundary or change might help you stop “turning the dial” toward darkness? What is one practical action you can take this week to walk more fully in the light?

Activation: Prayer of Examination

Take 1–2 minutes of silence and ask Holy Spirit:

“Holy Spirit, search my heart. Is there anything in my life that I am hiding, minimizing, or turning the dial toward darkness?”

  • What did God bring to mind?
  • What might it look like to bring that into the light?

Pray.
