Take It In
What does this reveal about who God is?
- Read 1 Samuel 16:1. God acknowledged Samuel's grief before redirecting him. What does it tell you about God's character that He didn't just demand that Samuel move on without recognizing his pain?
- God said, "You have mourned long enough." He didn’t say "stop feeling, stop caring." What is the difference between processing grief and making it your permanent address?
- Read 1 Samuel 16:6-7. Samuel was the most spiritually experienced person in the room, and he still defaulted to outward criteria. Where in your own life are you most tempted to evaluate people, or even yourself, by appearance, prominence, or performance?
- What does this reveal about God's character and how does it deepen the understanding of God's wisdom and love?
- How will you begin cultivating the kind of inner life that God is looking for, not for performance but for genuine closeness with Him?
Talk About It
How do we practically apply this?
- John opened with a coffee story about being completely convinced he was right until he was wrong. Where in your spiritual life have you had an "Aeropress moment," a place where you were certain, but God showed you a better way?
- David was overlooked by his own father, who did not even call him in from the field when the prophet arrived. Has there been a season in your life when you felt overlooked or underestimated? How did you handle that spiritually?
Take It Home
What are we doing this week?
This week, identify one area of your life where you have been grieving, stalled, or waiting and take one concrete step of faithful obedience forward. It doesn't have to be big. It just has to be forward.
Complete this sentence out loud with your group:
"The one step I will take this week to move faithfully forward is _______."
Prayer Time
Close by praying specifically for each person's "next step." Ask the Holy Spirit to move powerfully the way He moved on David in v.13 in every life represented in the room. Pray for anyone carrying grief that has overstayed its welcome. Pray for anyone who feels like they're still in the field, unseen, waiting. Ask God to anoint them fresh for what's next.
