What's something you've experienced that turned out to be more difficult than you originally expected (keep it lighthearted)?

Take It In

What does this reveal about who God is?

  1. Read Psalm 84:1–6.
    1. In verses 1–2, the psalmist expresses a deep longing for God's presence. What do these verses reveal about the kind of relationship God invites us to have with Him?
    2. Verse 5 describes those whose strength comes from the Lord and whose hearts are set on a pilgrimage. What do you think it looks like to depend on God's strength while still actively moving forward in faith?
    3. In verse 6, the Valley of Weeping becomes a place of refreshing springs. What does this reveal about God's character and His ability to work in the midst of difficult circumstances?
  2. Read Psalm 84:7–12.
    1. The psalm begins with a longing for God's presence and ends with a declaration of trust in Him. What connection do you see between pursuing God's presence and growing in our trust in Him?

Talk About It

How do we practically apply this?

  1. We can become so focused on getting out of the valley that we forget who we're supposed to be pursuing in the valley. Why do you think it's so easy to become consumed with our circumstances rather than God's presence?
  2. Sometimes we expect God's refreshing to come through a change in our circumstances, but He may refresh us right where we are. What are some ways you've experienced God's refreshing in a difficult season?
  3. God's presence is worth the journey. How can we cultivate a desire for God's presence that goes beyond simply wanting Him to change our circumstances?

Take It Home

What are we doing this week?

What is one area of your life where you need to trust God for the strength to take your next step, and what will that step look like this week?

Prayer Time

Spend time praying for one another, especially for those walking through difficult seasons. Pray for a renewed awareness of God's presence, His refreshing, and His strength.
